THE IMPORTANCE
Many of us have enjoyed TV and radio programs produced and aired by and through PBS and NPR through the years. Ask a person about the topic of public broadcasting and typical responses will usually refer to programs that are aired nationally.
But that misses the real point, the "heart and soul" of what public broadcasting was really supposed to be all about.
Locally produced programs, responding to local issues, and local needs, wants and priorities in radio and television are the issue ~ or rather, were supposed to be the issue in American Public Broadcasting.
Unfortunately, too many people along the way in the last couple of decades have missed the point.
The only possible way to ensure that the spotlight of importance in the issue is Honored and Perpetually Maintained is by insisting that public TV and radio station licensees are Appropriate Licensees for a Station's Local Community.
Forgive me, but let me repeat that. The only possible way to ensure that the spotlight of importance in the issue is Honored and Perpetually Maintained is by insisting that public TV and radio station licensees are Appropriate Licensees for a Station's Local Community.
So what makes an appropriate licensee? What would be the criteria?
First of all, we're not talking about a barely-populated area. We are talking about populated areas, such as South Florida; a place with many towns of sizable population and cities, that are close together.
In the context of Palm Beach County and The Treasure Coast... it is actually very simple.
What would constitute an appropriate licensee for a public radio or TV station serving Palm Beach County and The Treasure Coast, Florida, USA?
Who have the licensees been in the past for our area?
Who are they today?
Were they, have they been, and are they appropriate licensees?
